It's wise to see what each program listed below will qualify you for exactly.
It's important to note that many courses teach people to become psychedelic facilitators, rather than traditional therapists. This is because the practice of psychedelic-assisted therapy is currently limited to a very small area of the world, and the legal and regulatory landscape is still developing. However, with an increasing interest in psychedelic therapy and more training programmes being developed, the need for qualified therapists in this field is likely to grow in the future.
The courses cover topics such as the history and current state of research on psychedelics, therapeutic use of psychedelics, and the integration of psychedelics into traditional therapy practices. Additionally, students will learn about the different types of psychedelics and their potential therapeutic uses, as well as the various methods of administering these substances. Information on Becoming a Psychedelic Therapist
Becoming a psychedelic therapist involves enrolling in psychedelic therapy training programs that are currently available. These programs aim to train mental health providers to become psychedelic therapists and guides. As recent trials of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy enter the last phase (Phase III) of testing, the coming need for psychedelic training seems inevitable. The demand for many trained therapists and guides will be high. Until recently, the lone opportunity to train and work legally as a psychedelic therapist was by way of clinical trials. That will likely change over time as expanded access becomes the next step for current trials (evaluating MDMA and psilocybin) and if psychedelic-assisted therapies (PAT) become FDA approved.
There are currently some psychedelic training programs available, such as the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) program called the Certificate in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies and Research. However, many unknowns remain about the regulation of these trainings, and it is not yet known how FDA (and international equivalents) will regulate trainings for PAT. The FDA may approve MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD treatment in 024, which will likely increase the demand and need for psychedelic therapists and doctors. Psilocybin for depression treatment may also be approved in the future, following positive results from clinical trials.
