Ethics & Equity Courses
This page lists a variety of courses on the topic of psychedelic ethics and equity. The courses cover a range of topics including the ethical considerations surrounding the use of psychedelics in research and treatment, the impact of the commercialization of psychedelics on Indigenous communities, and the need for accessibility and affordability in psychedelic-assisted therapies. The courses are designed for students, researchers, and professionals in the fields of medicine, psychology, sociology, anthropology, and law, who are interested in gaining a comprehensive understanding of the ethical and equity issues surrounding psychedelics.
One of the key issues in the field of psychedelics is the ethical considerations surrounding the use of psychedelics in research and treatment. The first wave of psychedelic research in the 1950s and 1960s was marred with methodological flaws and unethical practices by today’s standards. Modern-day researchers are now tasked with overcoming past mistakes and complying with the highest regulatory and ethical standards. However, the legal issues and potency of psychedelics make it difficult to conduct randomized-controlled trials (RCTs) as normal. Additionally, the lack of diversity in psychedelic science is reflected in the demographics of those participating in clinical trials, with a majority of trial participants coming from western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic societies.
Another key issue in the field of psychedelics is the impact of the commercialization of psychedelics on Indigenous communities. Indigenous groups who have stewarded psychedelic plant medicine for thousands of years are increasingly alienated from their traditional practices and cultural heritage. Some initiatives and companies in the space, such as Chacruna and Woven Science, are working with Indigenous groups to foster community resilience and preserve the knowledge and practices. However, a collaborative effort from all in the field is needed to ensure that the traditional knowledge and practices of Indigenous communities are respected and protected. This includes ensuring that Indigenous communities have a say in how their cultural heritage is used and that they are not exploited for commercial gain.
Another important aspect of psychedelic ethics and equity is ensuring accessibility and affordability of psychedelic-assisted therapies for those who need them most. Psychedelic-assisted therapies have the potential to revolutionize the field of mental health care, but if these therapies are not accessible and affordable to all, they will only benefit a select few. This includes making sure that marginalized communities, such as those living in poverty or in rural areas, have access to these therapies.
The courses on psychedelic ethics and equity will address these and other important issues in the field, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the ethical and equity concerns surrounding psychedelics. They will also equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate these complex issues and contribute to the ongoing efforts to ensure that the use of psychedelics is ethical, equitable, and beneficial for all.

Information about Ethics & Equity Courses
Equity and ethics are critical considerations in the field of psychedelic medicine, and they are being discussed in a variety of courses offered on this topic. One of the key issues being addressed is the current classification of psychedelics as Schedule I substances, which makes it difficult and expensive to work with these substances. This classification also makes it challenging to conduct the research needed to prove the safety and efficacy of psychedelic treatment models, and it contributes to the high costs associated with these treatments. To address this issue, many courses are discussing the need for a change in drug policy to make it easier and more affordable to work with psychedelics.
Another important issue being discussed in these courses is the need for medical pluralism in the field of psychedelic medicine. Western medicine tends to rely on randomized-controlled trials (RCTs) to prove the safety and efficacy of treatments, but this approach may not be suitable for psychedelic medicine, which is based on different ways of knowing. By embracing medical pluralism, researchers and practitioners in the field can better understand the unique properties of psychedelics and how they can be used to treat mental health conditions. Additionally, issues related to patenting psychedelics, Open Science, and Indigenous reciprocity are being discussed as well. These courses provide a comprehensive understanding of the ethical and equity concerns surrounding psychedelics and equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate these complex issues and contribute to the ongoing efforts to ensure that the use of psychedelics is ethical, equitable, and beneficial for all.
