Idler is a company that has been around since 1993 and is dedicated to helping people live a more fulfilled life. The company offers various services such as a bi-monthly magazine, online courses, and live events. The magazine offers readers an opportunity to slow down and have fun while exploring topics related to leading a fulfilling life. The company's story began when journalist Tom Hodgkinson, bored with his job, decided to start a magazine called The Idler.
The company's educational offshoot, The Idler Academy, was founded in 2010 and offers courses in the classical liberal arts and practical skills. The academy offers courses such as philosophy, calligraphy, music, business skills, English grammar, ukulele, public speaking, singing, dancing, drawing, and self-defense, among others. The academy has appeared at various festivals such as the Wilderness, Shambala, Byline, and the Good Life Experience, and offers courses both online and at events or retreats.
The company's founder, Tom Hodgkinson, is a prolific writer who has authored books such as "How to be Idle," "How to be Free," "The Idle Parent," and "Brave Old World." Hodgkinson and his team have also produced best-selling books such as "Crap Towns," "Crap Holidays," and "Crap Jobs." The company's programming director, Victoria Hull, created The Clerkenwell Literary Festival in 1997 and has been involved with the Idler since its inception. Alice Smith, the company's art director since 2009, is responsible for the art direction of the magazine and the various illustrations, decorations, and borders on the website.
